Computers and Software Overview

Lasers and mechanical cutting machines are operated wirelessly with a separate computer, using web-based operating software.  The operating software may offer a variety of designs for free or by a paid subscription directly from the software or you can upload files from your computer.  The operating software can accept a variety of file types, but the only file type that is useful for fabric and paper is a .svg (Scalable Vector Graphic). You can create your own design files using a graphic design program or you can purchase files from an on-line store such as lasercutmyquilt.com.  Downloaded designs from a store are first saved to your computer.  They can then be opened in a graphic design program such as Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Design (one-time low cost), CoralDRAW, etc.  In the graphic design programs you can easily move, duplicate, and modify any design.  I use Affinity Design which is easy to learn using YouTube videos.  You don't have to learn all the function of the program, just how to make a shape, move a shape, duplicate a shape, etc.  From there you will export all or parts of the design into a new file.  The file is then uploaded to the web-based operating software for the machine to cut.
