Straight Uniform Block Grid Layout

Straightset.jpg

Examples:

Sewing blocks side by side creates secondary patterns that would not otherwise be seen when blocks are spaced apart with sashing.  Using 2 different blocks alternating side by side creates even more interesting patterns.  Quilts with just blocks require far more blocks, more fabric, and more time to assemble than the other setting options.

A checker board layout creates space between blocks that can be used for appliqué or quilting designs.

Sashing is used to separate blocks.,  The sashing and cornerstones can be pieced units or un-pieced. The floating lattice and floating 9-patch use a 3 rectangle pieced unit sashing with the outside rectangle matching the background fabric in the blocks, creating a floating appearance.  The partially sashed example uses sashing and cornerstones that match the background used in the blocks of this sampler quilt,  which highlights the design in each block.
