Shapes that are commonly used together are grouped together into shape sets. Most shape sets are available in several sizes. The shape sets that are used in quilt blocks are typically available in 8 sizes: 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6 inch. This gives the quilter the ability to construct most blocks into common block sizes including: 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12 inch. To determine what shape sets are needed to make a quilt block, the block should be subdivided into squares and pieced units. A pieced unit includes combinations of shapes that will form a squares, triangles, or rectangles.
Examples:
3 inch Square set (Use single SQ for the corners and use 4SQ for the center unit)
6 x 3 inch Flying Geese set.

2 inch Square Set (make corner triangles)

1.5 inch Square Set (make 4SQ units)

Shape sets can also be based on a specific group of blocks or overall pattern. The 8-Pointed Star Set is based on blocks with 8-pointed stars. The set includes a rhombus and all the shapes around the rhombus. You can make many different blocks with just one shape set.
